Corruption, climate change are sinking this country

The roads and streets are in water. Their feet and legs are in water. The first floors of their houses are in water. For Filipinos, these are daily if not weekly scenarios.

The Philippines is faced with dozens of severe flooding events each year, often tied to super typhoons and monsoon rains, making it one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. The phenomenon has gotten worse in recent days due to climate change.

But behind all of this lies a bigger nationwide issue: corruption. Two billions US dollars worth of public funds, intended for building anti-fooding projects, have been siphoned off or gone into the pockets of corrupted officials, lawmakers and companies, resulting in ineffective or non-existent infrastructure.

The deadly combination of corruption and climate change is sinking the country, causing property and economic losses, and suffering the people.
